Spring is your chance to set the foundation for a beautiful lawn year. Follow this checklist to start strong.

Spring cleanup sets up success for the entire season. Here's your essential checklist.

Survey and Clean

  • Walk property, note damage and problem areas

  • Remove all debris, leaves, and branches

  • Fix drainage issues before they cause problems

  • Clear beds and hardscape areas

Soil and Lawn Care

Soil Test: Check pH and nutrients every 2-3 years. North Texas soil is typically high pH and clay-heavy.

Aerate: Core aeration in late spring for warm-season grasses. Only if compaction is an issue.

Dethatch: Only if thatch exceeds ½ inch (Bermuda and Zoysia accumulate fastest).

Equipment and Systems

Mower Maintenance:

  • Change oil and spark plug

  • Sharpen blade (most critical)

  • Replace air filter

  • Check tire pressure

Irrigation Check:

  • Test all zones for leaks and coverage

  • Adjust spray patterns

  • Fix broken heads

  • Check controller settings

Treatment Applications

Pre-Emergent: Apply when soil hits 55°F (late Feb/early March) for crabgrass prevention.

Fertilization: First feeding when grass is 50% green. Bermuda/Zoysia: ½-1 lb nitrogen per 1,000 sq ft.

Weed Control: Spot-treat visible winter weeds with post-emergent.

Finishing Touches

  • Edge and define beds (4-6 inches deep)

  • Refresh mulch (add 2-3 inches)

  • Overseed thin or bare areas

  • Prune damaged branches
