Crisp edges frame your landscape and keep mulch where it belongs. Learn professional edging techniques.

Clean bed edges dramatically improve curb appeal while making maintenance easier. Here's how to edge like a pro.

Why Edge Beds?

Visual: Creates definition and frames plantings

Functional: Blocks grass invasion, contains mulch

Maintenance: Easier mowing, less weeding

Creating Perfect Edges

Planning

  • Use garden hose for curved layouts

  • String and stakes for straight lines

  • Consider mowing patterns and viewpoints

  • Mark sprinkler heads

Cutting Technique

1. Stand on lawn side facing bed

2. Cut vertically (90°) first

3. Use confident strokes, not jabbing

4. Remove 2-3" wedge at 45° angle

5. Clean vertical face with trowel

6. Remove loose soil

Depth and Angle

4-6 inches deep blocks grass rhizomes (Bermuda goes deep)

45-60° inward angle deflects runners and resists erosion

Edging Materials (Optional)

Natural: Stone (permanent), brick (classic), wood (budget-friendly)

Manufactured: Metal (modern), concrete (customizable), plastic (cheap)

Choose based on home style, budget, and maintenance tolerance.

Seasonal Maintenance

Spring: Redefine winter damage, add fresh mulch

Summer: Maintain fast-growing areas, check for invasion

Fall: Prep for fall mulching, fix summer issues

Winter: Minimal work, plan improvements

Common Mistakes

  • Too shallow (grass breaks through)

  • Not removing soil wedge (no barrier)

  • Working wet soil (compacts)

  • Inconsistent lines (use guides)
